Mass segment Honda Dream Yuga: Tested

Honda switched on their ‘aggression mode’ after their tie-up with India’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, Hero came to an end. The Japanese giant, which was already present with commuter-segment bikes in the country launched their first ever mass-segment motorcycle, the Dream Yuga. We take the bike for a spin around the city to find out what is so special about this new bike from Honda.
Honda Dream Yuga shares same design lines with Honda’s another commuter segment, the 125cc Shine. The newest offering from Honda is however made as simple as it could have been. First glance and you know the bike is made for two purposes; commuting and second, even more commuting within the city.

We got the commuting bike in black and red color with all black treatment on engine, alloys and exhaust which highlights the bike and makes it different from the other bikes present in the segment. While designing Dream Yuga, Honda for sure took care and made the bike visually appealing. The tinted black visor above the aerodynamic headlamp looks smart and sporty. The graphic on the body begs for a second look and adds to all the style factors which are made up by 6-spoke black alloys and all black metal work, in fact, there is very less visible chrome on the bike. The two-dial console shows basic information like speed, fuel level and odometer. Even though Honda made sure that quality of switches are highly maintained, the placement of the same are conventional which doesn’t require you to spend some time with the bike before operating it blindly. The best thing Honda did to the switchgear is adding a high beam pass button which actually makes a difference in night – this is something that not all rivals offer.

The rear cowl has been worked upon and designed to complete the looks of the machine unlike other commuter segment bikes. A curved grab-rail above the big rear tail-lamps completes the sporty and attractive look of the bike.
Powered by a 109cc air-cooled 4-stroke, SI engine, the high fuel economy motor produces maximum power of 8.5 bhp at 7500 rpm and 8.91 Nm of maximum torque at 5500 rpm. The engine, just like its elder sibling, the Shine, feels very peppy and zooms to 60 km/hour mark without any sign of stress. However, push it beyond that and it will become breathless as the needle starts kissing the 80km/h. Make no mistake, it will do around 90 on the speedometer but that’s not the bike’s forte at all.

The small engine is mated with 4-speed transmission and the power is well distributed across the gears with enough toruqe to play with in first and second gear. Infact, with a pillion, riding in slow moving traffic in 2nd and 3rd gears is a breeze.
Dream Yuga strictly follows Honda’s typical attributes of being super silent and smooth. Dream Yuga returns a claimed fuel economy of 72km per liter, which is more than enough reason for any commuter to like this bike which has many added features.

Honda made sure to make Dream Yuga a very low-cost ownership bike and hence, features like viscous air filter and tubeless tyres have been added to the two-wheeler. The front wheel rests on soft telescopic forks with very small turning radius; find a space in traffic and this bike will slip in between. The tube-type suspensions in rear, upright seating position on a comfortable single seat delays the fatigue during start and stop office hours traffic.

Honda offers the bike in three variants; Kick-Spoke, Kick-Alloy and Self-Alloy with 5 color options. The Dream Yuga carries a price tag starting from Rs 44642 and goes up to Rs 48125 (ex-showroom, Delhi) which puts the bike into direct competition against Splendour, Crux, Platina, Star CIty, Sling Shot and the likes.
Even though Honda did a good job to the engine, looks and overall feel of the machine, we still miss a front disc, a trip meter and a fifth gear. There is no doubt, Honda didn’t take a short-cut while designing the bike but there is always something more that can be expected from a brand like Honda just because they have upped the ante in various other segments. That said, the Dream Yuga takes the Japanese giant to the core of the business – the masses and it won’t be wrong to say that the company and its dealers are already minting money with this new product now.
